Visiting a Turkish marble bath (“_hamam_” in Turkish) will open your pores and maybe even your mind to new ways to cleanse and relax. The steam and exfoliating massage will remove your dead skin cells, and your body will relax in a way you’ve never experienced before.

Traditionally, in a _hamam,_ people only wear a loincloth to cover their private parts and clean their bodies thoroughly. If you prefer, a _tellak_ (masseur) scrubs and massages your body using _kese (_a bath glove) to exfoliate your skin as you lie on the central marble table, _göbektaşı_ in Turkish.

If you are a nature lover, Atatürk Arboretum is a great place to visit in Istanbul. This magical forest covers an area of 730 acres southeast of Belgrad Forest in Sarıyer. There are beautiful ponds reflecting every color in nature, as well as ducks, swans, and even some friendly squirrels here.

The arboretum is closed on Mondays, and the visiting hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on other days. It’s not allowed to bring food or beverages into the arboretum except water and baby food.

The café was named after French writer Julien Viaud, who frequented the café in the 1890s. Pierre Loti was his pseudonym.

The café was a popular romantic rendezvous point for lovers in classical Turkish [Yeşilçam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Turkey) movies. It provides spectacular views, especially in the sunset.

You can reach the hilltop by walking through a cemetery, where you can see some historical headstones and tombstones from the Ottoman era. But it’s best to take the aerial cable car to the hilltop, then walk on your way back.

Masumiyet Müzesi (The Museum of Innocence) is a museum in Çukurcuma based on the namesake [book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Museum_of_Innocence) by the Nobel-winner author, Orhan Pamuk. The museum exhibits the artifacts of the love story between the characters in his novel: Kemal, a wealthy Istanbulite, and his poorer cousin, Füsun.

According to [the museum website](https://en.masumiyetmuzesi.org/page/the-museum-of-innocence), the collection consists of more than a thousand objects that the novel’s characters “used, wore, heard, saw, collected and dreamed of,” offering a glimpse of the novel’s characters’ lives and the life in Istanbul between the 1950s-2000s.

The museum is a 19th-century house on the corner of Çukurcuma Street. It was also the winner of the 2014 European Museum of the Year Award.

### 1\. Sultanahmet / Blue Mosque

This mosque is referred to as [The Blue Mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/blue-mosque/) because of the beautiful hand-painted blue İznik tiles adorning its interior. When the light enters through the mosque’s 260 stained glass windows and shines more than 20,000 tiles, the massive mosque’s interior is bathed in blue.

The mosque was completed in 1616, during the rule of Sultan Ahmed I. Designed to outshine the Hagia Sophia standing across, the Sultanahmet Mosque incorporates Byzantine elements along with traditional Islamic architecture.

The architects were influenced by Hagia Sophia’s dome structure but planned the exterior to be more ornate. The interior is also decorated with flower figures that are symbolic of Islam.

Whereas most mosques mostly have four minarets, Sultanahmet Mosque exceptionally has five main domes, six minarets, and eight secondary domes. The mosque complex comprises a tomb of the Sultan, a madrasa, and a hospice.

The Sultanahmet Mosque is still open to prayers five times a day, as well as visits from thousands of tourists every year.

After being built in the 6th century as a cathedral for the Byzantine Empire, the building was converted into a mosque under Ottoman rule in 1453. It served as a museum from 1932 to 2020, and now it’s an active mosque open to visits.

During its reconstruction in 1800, architects chose to implement the Baroque style and a stone color reflecting hues of golden and amber. It has one large dome measuring 57.5 feet across, with two half domes for support.

[The mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/eyuep-sultan-mosque/) is located outside the city walls near the Golden Horn. The mosque complex also includes a mausoleum of Abu Ayub al-Ansari (Eyüp), the standard-bearer, and a friend of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. The tomb is decorated with beautiful hand-painted İznik tiles in all shades of blue.

Eyüp Sultan Mosque was the traditional site for the Ottoman Sultans’ coronation ceremony. This mosque is deemed more sacred than a usual place of worship among the Islamic world.

### 4\. Ortaköy / Büyük Mecidiye Mosque

The current [Büyük Mecidiye Mosque](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ortak%C3%B6y_Mosque) was completed in 1856 by Garabet Amira Balyan and Nigoğayos Balyan, the Armenian father and son architects who also designed the Dolmabahçe Palace and its mosque. It was built in the 16th century by the famous Ottoman architect [Mimar Sinan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimar_Sinan) for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent.

Byzantine elements such as large domes and slim minarets from Islamic architecture are combined beautifully in this complex. With the restorations, Baroque elements were also added to the design.

The interior is elegantly decorated, underlining a sense of space and light. Although less ornate than most mosques, this impressive structure is one of the best works of Ottoman Islamic architecture in Istanbul.

[This grand mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/sueleymaniye-mosque/) is located on the third hill of Istanbul and includes a hospital, a library, madrasa (schools) and soup kitchens, hammams, and shops. Later on the mausoleums of the Sultan, his wife Hürrem, and Mimar Sinan were added within the complex.

### 6 & 7. Mihrimah Sultan Mosques

The two Mihrimah Sultan mosques on two sides of Istanbul are located in perfect symmetry to each other.  These two historical 16th\-century structures hide an architectural wonder and a hopeless love story in their walls.

The mosques were commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, and designed by the imperial architect [Mimar Sinan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimar_Sinan). And Mimar Sinan, who was hopelessly in love with the Sultan, carved his love into his genius designs. Note that Mihrimah (Mihr-u Mâh) means “sun and moon” in Persian, and you’ll see how.

If you stand on a location where you can see both mosques, on March 21 of every year (Mihrimah Sultan’s birthday and the Spring equinox), you’ll see the sun setting behind the only minaret of [the mosque in Edirnekapı](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/mihrimah-sultan-mosque-edirnekapi/), and the moon rising between the minarets of the mosque in Üsküdar. This is a perfect representation of the Sultan’s name and Sinan’s love for her.

Also, the [Üsküdar mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/mihrimah-sultan-mosque-ueskuedar/) was built with few windows to symbolize the moon, whereas the Edirnekapı mosque’s several windows symbolize the sun. The Edirnekapı mosque has one minaret to symbolize Sinan’s loneliness (although he was married to someone else at the time).

[The mosque in the Üsküdar district](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihrimah_Sultan_Mosque,_%C3%9Csk%C3%BCdar) (also called İskele Camii/ the Pier Mosque) was the first one to be built, and [the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Fatih, Edirnekapı](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihrimah_Sultan_Mosque,_Edirnekap%C4%B1) was the second one.

### 8\. Şemsi Paşa / Kuşkonmaz Mosque

[This tiny mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/semsi-pasha-mosque/) by the ferry docks in Üsküdar is one of the less famous mosques in the city. However, it’s another prime example of Mimar Sinan’s architectural genius and one of the most interesting buildings in Istanbul.

Married to Mihrimah Sultan's daughter, Grand Vizier Şemsi Pasha commissioned this mosque, making an unusual request to the imperial architect Mimar Sinan.

Şemsi Paşa wanted no birds to fly over (and defecate on) his mosque. Sinan found the perfect spot for the mosque in Üsküdar, where northern and southern winds ogle at each other, making it impossible for birds to fly in the sky. Sinan also believed that the sounds and vibrations caused by the waves breaking at the walls by the sea would disturb the birds and keep them away.

Sinan was ninety years old when he accomplished Şemsi Paşa’s impossible wish, but Şemsi Pasha didn’t live to see the mosque finished. The mosque opened one year after his death, and he was buried in it.

The name “Kuşkonmaz” means “where no birds land,” and no birds have ever settled on the [Şemsi Paşa Mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/semsi-pasha-mosque/) since 1580.

Unlike the traditional mosques rising high from the ground, their minarets piercing the sky, this underground building is almost invisible from above and blends in entirely with the topography.

The mosque’s interior is a simple cave-like space, and the whole design is primeval, in a sense. But the serene atmosphere of the unusually plain structure allows one to feel alone with God, taking worship up to a meditative level.

This extraordinary mosque was also the main character [in a movie titled Rüya (Dream)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5636334/) by the acclaimed Turkish writer and director Derviş Zaim.

### Hagia Sophia

### Galata Tower

The Best Ways to Get Around in Istanbul

### 1\. On Foot

The best way to explore Istanbul is on foot; however, you can’t explore all of Istanbul this way.

Tourists should plan to get around Istanbul on foot as much as possible to see more of the city and its rich culture.

You’ll see more of the city and its people on foot than by any other mode of transportation.

Walk along the Bosphorus Bridge, wander the old roads of the Grand Bazaar, and plan a day on foot at Sultanahmet, where you can see Topkapı Palace and the Hagia Sophia.

[Istanbul is safe](/posts/is-istanbul-safe) for you to go around on foot, as long as you avoid dark alleys or wandering late at night. Keep an eye on your belongings [to avoid pickpockets](/posts/common-tourist-scams-istanbul) in Sultanahmet.

Wear proper walking shoes to the Grand Bazaar. The winding streets aren’t all paved and can easily catch a high heel. Wear low wedges or flat, comfortable walking shoes to avoid tripping down one of the city’s hills.

### 2\. Tram

Although walking is the best way to get around Istanbul, it isn’t always practical. Few people have the time or energy to walk the length of the city, especially if they’re booked for a Turkish hammam.

The best form of transit in Istanbul is the tram. There are 4 tram lines in Istanbul. You’ll likely rely on Bağcılar-Kabataş (T1), which serves the city’s main sights, like the Galata Tower. Istanbul’s trams are just as nice as any European tram.

The city’s metro is a comfortable way to get around. It runs from all corners of the city, even outside of the tourist districts.

The metro is a great discount way to get from the city center to the Istanbul Airport (IST). Although the stops are more spaced out than the tram or bus stops, Istanbul’s metro is one of the few ways you can avoid the city’s rush hour traffic. At 8 am and 6 pm, traffic comes to a standstill above ground. Go below the ground to avoid the slower transit above the ground.

### 4\. Bus

The Istanbul bus network is the most extensive transit in the city. Although it runs to more locations than the tram or the metro, it has one major problem: space.

Due to the heavy traffic and designated bus lanes, people pack the buses to their limits. You may find yourself squished against strangers or struggling to get off past the mass of people.

Avoid the buses during rush hour times to maintain your personal space. The buses run outside of rush hour, from 6 am to midnight.

Although the buses go around the city, they aren’t a great way to take in any sights. You’ll spend most of your time focused on the coming stops, as the Istanbul buses don’t announce them.

### 5\. Ferry or Seabus

Riding the ferry or the sea bus is one of the best ways to get around Istanbul.

Not only do the water vehicles avoid heavy rush hour traffic, but they also offer stunning views of the Bosphorus and Istanbul’s skylines.

There are several ports along the city’s shores used by both tourists and commuters. Keep your Istanbulkart handy to get discounted tickets, like a ride to Princes’ Island for 5.50 TL. You can even get a two-hour Bosphorus tour for 12 TL or a full-day adventure for 25 TL.

Not only does the ferry offer one of the most unique views of the city, but it’s also one of the cheapest tours you can find. Avoid the overpriced and scammy Bosphorus tours offered near the pier of Eminönü and opt for the affordable tour offered by the municipality.

### 6\. Taxi

Be careful of taxi drivers who claim their meter is broken, as they’ll give you a massively overpriced charge at the end of your journey. Don’t let your taxi driver take you sightseeing. They may try to take you on the scenic route or to see a particular place, meanwhile, they’re running their meter up to charge you more.

Cars are the worst way to get around Istanbul.
