Traditionally, in a _hamam,_ people only wear a loincloth to cover their private parts and clean their bodies thoroughly. The arboretum is closed on Mondays, and the visiting hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on other days. It’s not allowed to bring food or beverages into the arboretum except water and baby food.

Masumiyet Müzesi (The Museum of Innocence) is a museum in Çukurcuma based on the namesake [book](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Museum_of_Innocence) by the Nobel-winner author, Orhan Pamuk. The museum exhibits the artifacts of the love story between the characters in his novel: Kemal, a wealthy Istanbulite, and his poorer cousin, Füsun.

According to [the museum website](https://en.masumiyetmuzesi.org/page/the-museum-of-innocence), the collection consists of more than a thousand objects that the novel’s characters “used, wore, heard, saw, collected and dreamed of,” offering a glimpse of the novel’s characters’ lives and the life in Istanbul between the 1950s-2000s.

The museum is a 19th-century house on the corner of Çukurcuma Street. It was also the winner of the 2014 European Museum of the Year Award.

When the light enters through the mosque’s 260 stained glass windows and shines more than 20,000 tiles, the massive mosque’s interior is bathed in blue.

The mosque was completed in 1616, during the rule of Sultan Ahmed I. Designed to outshine the Hagia Sophia standing across, the Sultanahmet Mosque incorporates Byzantine elements along with traditional Islamic architecture.

The architects were influenced by Hagia Sophia’s dome structure but planned the exterior to be more ornate. The interior is also decorated with flower figures that are symbolic of Islam.

Whereas most mosques mostly have four minarets, Sultanahmet Mosque exceptionally has five main domes, six minarets, and eight secondary domes. The mosque complex comprises a tomb of the Sultan, a madrasa, and a hospice.

The Sultanahmet Mosque is still open to prayers five times a day, as well as visits from thousands of tourists every year.

During its reconstruction in 1800, architects chose to implement the Baroque style and a stone color reflecting hues of golden and amber. It has one large dome measuring 57.5 feet across, with two half domes for support.

The current [Büyük Mecidiye Mosque](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ortak%C3%B6y_Mosque) was completed in 1856 by Garabet Amira Balyan and Nigoğayos Balyan, the Armenian father and son architects who also designed the Dolmabahçe Palace and its mosque. Inside the mosque, there are several panels of calligraphy executed by Abdülmecid I himself.

### 5\. Süleymaniye Mosque

[The Süleymaniye Mosque](https://www.ktb.gov.tr/EN-113783/suleymaniye-mosque.html) was the largest in Istanbul until 2019 with its staggering size. Its central dome stands 154ft high. It was built in the 16th century by the famous Ottoman architect [Mimar Sinan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimar_Sinan) for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent.

Byzantine elements such as large domes and slim minarets from Islamic architecture are combined beautifully in this complex. With the restorations, Baroque elements were also added to the design.

The interior is elegantly decorated, underlining a sense of space and light. Although less ornate than most mosques, this impressive structure is one of the best works of Ottoman Islamic architecture in Istanbul.

[This grand mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/sueleymaniye-mosque/) is located on the third hill of Istanbul and includes a hospital, a library, madrasa (schools) and soup kitchens, hammams, and shops. Later on the mausoleums of the Sultan, his wife Hürrem, and Mimar Sinan were added within the complex.

### 6 & 7. Mihrimah Sultan Mosques

The two Mihrimah Sultan mosques on two sides of Istanbul are located in perfect symmetry to each other.  These two historical 16th\-century structures hide an architectural wonder and a hopeless love story in their walls.

The mosques were commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, and designed by the imperial architect [Mimar Sinan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimar_Sinan). And Mimar Sinan, who was hopelessly in love with the Sultan, carved his love into his genius designs. Note that Mihrimah (Mihr-u Mâh) means “sun and moon” in Persian, and you’ll see how.

If you stand on a location where you can see both mosques, on March 21 of every year (Mihrimah Sultan’s birthday and the Spring equinox), you’ll see the sun setting behind the only minaret of [the mosque in Edirnekapı](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/mihrimah-sultan-mosque-edirnekapi/), and the moon rising between the minarets of the mosque in Üsküdar. This is a perfect representation of the Sultan’s name and Sinan’s love for her.

Also, the [Üsküdar mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/mihrimah-sultan-mosque-ueskuedar/) was built with few windows to symbolize the moon, whereas the Edirnekapı mosque’s several windows symbolize the sun. The Edirnekapı mosque has one minaret to symbolize Sinan’s loneliness (although he was married to someone else at the time).

[The mosque in the Üsküdar district](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihrimah_Sultan_Mosque,_%C3%9Csk%C3%BCdar) (also called İskele Camii/ the Pier Mosque) was the first one to be built, and [the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Fatih, Edirnekapı](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihrimah_Sultan_Mosque,_Edirnekap%C4%B1) was the second one.

### 8\. Şemsi Paşa / Kuşkonmaz Mosque

[This tiny mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/semsi-pasha-mosque/) by the ferry docks in Üsküdar is one of the less famous mosques in the city. However, it’s another prime example of Mimar Sinan’s architectural genius and one of the most interesting buildings in Istanbul.

Married to Mihrimah Sultan's daughter, Grand Vizier Şemsi Pasha commissioned this mosque, making an unusual request to the imperial architect Mimar Sinan.

Şemsi Paşa wanted no birds to fly over (and defecate on) his mosque. Sinan found the perfect spot for the mosque in Üsküdar, where northern and southern winds ogle at each other, making it impossible for birds to fly in the sky. Sinan also believed that the sounds and vibrations caused by the waves breaking at the walls by the sea would disturb the birds and keep them away.

Sinan was ninety years old when he accomplished Şemsi Paşa’s impossible wish, but Şemsi Pasha didn’t live to see the mosque finished. The mosque opened one year after his death, and he was buried in it.

The name “Kuşkonmaz” means “where no birds land,” and no birds have ever settled on the [Şemsi Paşa Mosque](https://istanbul-tourist-information.com/en/experience-istanbul/places-of-worship-in-istanbul/mosques-in-istanbul/semsi-pasha-mosque/) since 1580.

### 9\. Sancaklar Mosque

Built in 2012 by architect Emre Arolat in Büyükçekmece, this striking mosque was awarded the Religious Building of the Year Award for 2015 by ArchDaily.

[Sancaklar Mosque](https://emrearolat.com/project/sancaklar-mosque/) is located in a prairie landscape separated from the surrounding suburban gated communities by a busy highway. Unlike the traditional mosques rising high from the ground, their minarets piercing the sky, this underground building is almost invisible from above and blends in entirely with the topography.

The mosque’s interior is a simple cave-like space, and the whole design is primeval, in a sense. But the serene atmosphere of the unusually plain structure allows one to feel alone with God, taking worship up to a meditative level.

This extraordinary mosque was also the main character [in a movie titled Rüya (Dream)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5636334/) by the acclaimed Turkish writer and director Derviş Zaim.

### Hagia Sophia

### The Blue Mosque

The mosque is actually called the Sultanahmet Mosque, and it dates back to 1617. It’s located in the heart of the Sultanahmet area, within walking distance from all other historical sites found here.

### Galata Tower

The Tower was originally named the Tower of Christ. Once the highest tower in the city, it’s 66.9 meters (200 feet) tall. Thus, it provides an iconic panoramic view of the old town.

Even if you are a bit afraid of heights, visiting the Galata Tower is totally worth it. 

### Topkapı Palace 

Also known as the Seraglio, Topkapı Palace is a massive museum in Istanbul, home to exhibitions like the Ottoman Empire's imperial collections. 

The museum dates back to the 15th century and was the main residence and administrative headquarters of all Ottoman sultans until the reign of Abdulmecid I between 1839 and 1860.

How Many Days Do You Need in Istanbul?

### 1\. Turkish Tea

Tea is literally everywhere in Turkey! From restaurants and shops to schools, homes, and offices, you’re always treated to a freshly brewed pot of black tea. Drinking tea is an essential daily routine for Turkish people.

Believe it or not, many locals drink up to 10 glasses of tea every single day! And when you’re offered a cup of tea in Turkey, you can always assume it’s black tea.

There are many other herbal and fruit teas in Turkey, but Turks refer to black tea as _çay,_ which literally means “tea.” So if you wish to have some other variety, you need to ask for it specifically. You can have Turkish black tea with some sugar, honey, or lemon, although most locals prefer it plain or with sugar.

Tea leaves are grown in the northern Blacksea (_Karadeniz_) region of Turkey. Traditionally, Turkish tea is brewed in a teapot called _çaydanlık,_ usually for about 15-20 minutes. The longer it waits, the darker, stronger, and more bitter it gets.

Turkish tea is best enjoyed in Turkish tea glasses made of thin glass with a special curve and shape.

### 2\. Turkish Coffee

Turkish Coffee is a world-famous hot drink, and it’s the second most popular one in Turkey. Turkish coffee is close to a double-espresso in terms of strength and size.

What makes it special is the unique brewing method. Turkish coffee is made in a special pot called _cezve_, traditionally made from copper.

This strong coffee is sweetened with white sugar before being served, so you’ll be asked how sweet you want it when you order one. You’ve four options: _sade_ (no sugar), _az şekerli_ (slightly sweetened), _orta_ (mildly sweetened), and _şekerli_ (sweet).

Turkish coffee is served in small porcelain cups with handles, usually with sweet Turkish delights called _lokum_ or some chocolate on the side.

You put one spoonful of coffee per person in the water at room temperature, add sugar if you like, and slowly cook it. It can also be made with milk, but it’s not common.

You stir the coffee constantly and pour it into small cups right when it starts boiling. If you let it boil longer, you’ll lose the bubbles and foam, which are desirable to have.

Coffee has an important role in [Turkey’s culture](/posts/what-to-know-before-visiting-turkey). Guests are usually offered Turkish tea or coffee after a meal or during any kind of meeting.

Turkish coffee is also a big part of the ceremonial step before engagement. When the future groom and his family ask for the future bride’s family for their daughter’s hand in marriage, they are served coffee, made by the bride-to-be.

### 3\. Ayran

This is one of the most consumed cold drinks in Turkey. _Ayran_ is basically a cold salty yogurt drink. When made at home, plain yogurt is diluted and shaken with water, and salt is added to the mixture.

Turkish people drink it with meals or as a refreshment during hot summer days. You can find bottled _ayran_ everywhere in Turkey, from restaurants to shops and markets.

_Ayran_ goes perfectly with meat, chicken, and, of course, kebabs. It’s not so common to drink _ayran_ with seafood; when it comes to seafood meals, the glasses are reserved for our old friend _rakı_, but more on that later.

While ordering _ayran_ in a restaurant, you can be offered two options. If it’s homemade, or mixed in a machine in the restaurant, it’s called “açık ayran” in Turkish. These machines mimic the traditional way to make the more buttery _yayık ayranı_ that’s served with a thick layer of foam on it.

"_Açık ayran_" is usually more delicious than the second option, which is the bottled _ayran_ called “_kapalı_ _ayran._”

### 4\. Rakı

Famously known as “lion’s milk” due to its distinct white color when mixed with water, _rakı_ is [an alcoholic drink](/posts/drinking-alcohol-in-turkey) with a unique taste that combines aniseed flavors with distilled grapes.

There are many Turkish brands producing _rakı,_ and each has its fans. _Rakı_ has an alcohol percentage of around 40%-45% and can easily sneak up on first-time drinkers. 

_Rakı_ is usually consumed at “çilingir sofrası,” a table full of hot and cold appetizers called “meze,” which are sometimes referred to as Turkish _tapas_. It’s a common tradition for Turkish people to come together to drink _rakı_ and [share some laughs, talk politics, and even sing and dance](/posts/drinking-alcohol-in-turkey).

Rakı is served with cold water and ice. You can pour the water into the same glass with rakı or drink it in a separate glass.

If it’s your first time, it’s better to mix it with water because the taste of rakı is really strong. Some people also have a glass of _şalgam_ juice (number seven below) to go with it.

Certain restaurants called _meyhane_ in Turkish provide a special entertainment called _fasıl_ for _rakı_ drinkers. Musicians play popular songs from Turkish and Ottoman classical music in the restaurant and move from table to table, asking for tips. This local music is nothing like Western classical music and is very entertaining.

Try it with your friends or join some Turkish groups in a restaurant, it’s always an unforgettable experience.

### 5\. Boza

_Boza_ is a malt drink dating back to the 8th millennia BCE. It’s made by fermenting grains, usually wheat or millet in Turkey. During cold winter nights, you can hear the peddlers from the street yelling, “_booozaaaa_”!

Although it’s served cold, it’s highly preferred [in the winter months](/posts/what-to-wear-in-turkey) to get warm because it’s a thick, heavy drink with lots of protein and nutrients in it.

_Boza_ has a strong, distinctive taste. It’s an acquired taste, but there are many who like it. It’s served with cinnamon and roasted chickpeas.

“Vefa” is the most famous _boza_ brand in Turkey. You can also make it at home but not as easily as _ayran_.

_Boza_ is also famous for its positive health effects. Pregnant and nursing women consume _boza_ for its high levels of protein, carbs, and B vitamins. So, you can also try it for health benefits.
